What Is Medicare Part B?

Medicare Part B is Medical Insurance that covers outpatient care and services. This includes doctor visits, preventive services, lab tests, X-rays, outpatient procedures, durable medical equipment (like walkers and oxygen), home health care, and ambulance services.

Part B works together with Medicare Part A to form Original Medicare, providing essential health coverage beyond hospital stays.

How Much Does Medicare Part B Cost?

In 2024, most people pay a standard monthly premium of $(520) 370-8568 (this amount may adjust each year and can vary based on income).

Other costs include:

  • Annual deductible: $(520) 370-8568.
  • Coinsurance: After meeting the deductible, you usually pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most services, as long as your provider accepts Medicare (“assignment”).

It’s important to note that there is no annual out-of-pocket maximum unless you have additional coverage, like a Medigap policy or Medicare Advantage plan.

When and How to Enroll in Part B

Most people enroll in Part B when they turn 65.

  • Automatic enrollment: If you're already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits at 65.
  • Manual enrollment: If you aren’t receiving these benefits yet, you need to sign up yourself.

If you have credible employer coverage after 65, you may delay Part B without penalty. There are special enrollment periods that allow you to sign up later without late fees.

Deciding whether to enroll now or wait can be complex — I can help you make the best choice for your situation.

What Isn’t Covered by Part B?

While Part B covers many outpatient services, it does not include:

  • Routine dental, vision, or hearing care
  • Long-term custodial care
  • Prescription drugs (covered under Part D)
  • Most chiropractic or alternative therapies

That’s why many people choose additional coverage options to fill these gaps, like a Medicare Supplement plan or Medicare Advantage plan.

How Part B Works with Other Medicare Coverage

Part B pairs with Part A to form Original Medicare. Together, they provide hospital and medical coverage — but they don’t cover everything.

To manage costs and fill gaps, many people:

  • Add a Medigap policy to cover coinsurance and other out-of-pocket costs.
  • Choose a Medicare Advantage plan, which combines Parts A & B and often includes extra benefits.

I will help you understand these options clearly and guide you toward the best combination for your health needs and budget.
